Ivan was bred by Betsy Oliviera. Willie’s great dog “Luke” (Linus) was the father, and Una (bred by Carol Rasche) was the mother. Ivan was Willie’s pick puppy. Willie wasn’t set up for a puppy at the time, so we took him home to raise him. But when it came time to give him back to Willie, well, it just didn’t happen.

Ivan was a freight train on the courage test: fast, direct, and very serious and powerful. But his drive and suspicion made him a difficult dog to live with and made his obedience and tracking somewhat challenging. He was very environmentally aware, and reacted to people over in the next county. He had a “bull in a china shop” personality — over the top in enthusiasm and excitement, always on the go.

Ivan died of gastric torsion and volvulus on Christmas day.

Warren and Ivan were ready to go for their Schutzhund 1, but Warren noticed some reluctance to sit. Thinking it was a training problem, they headed home to do some refresher work. They achieved their SchH1 in Colorado, but then came the day during a seminar when Ivan said he’d rather lie down in the shade than do bitework. That was like a starving dog refusing food, and we knew something serious was wrong. After xrays showed some spinal injuries, Warren & Ivan left for California, where Dr Richardson performed surgery on a dislocated vertebrae and herniated discs. After recovering from surgery, Ivan went on to his SchH2 title, and we all had high hopes for the SchH3. Unfortunately, although Ivan’s heart was still in the work, his body couldn’t achieve what his mind told him to do. His leaps to the sleeve, particularly on runaways, were many feet short of the mark. We finally realised it was unfair to ask him work so hard for a title that was only important to us. So, Ivan was retired in the Spring of 2001.
