Poor Bubba. There were things about him that could have been great. He was one of the nicest looking dogs I’ve ever owned. He was a nice, calm, natural tracking dog. In obedience he was capable of excellent work, although he didn’t handle pressure well. Unfortunately, it was in protection where he failed. I would work him in tracking and obedience, be filled with hope because of the nice work he did, and then bring him out in protection, only to have those hopes dashed.
He is a nervous dog, lacking confidence. Visiting the vet, he crawls on his belly on the floor, trembling with fear and ready to bite. This lack of confidence really shows in protection, where he bites the hand-end of the sleeve, pulling the sleeve as far away from the helper’s body as possible, growling and pilo-erecting.
His sister, Addie, has absolutely no working drives at all. Another sister was a submissive urinator with surface issues. A brother, initially owned by a USA judge, ended up as a family pet. Another brother was bought as a pup by a high-level competitor who said the dog was a total waste. The pedigree looks nice on paper… as a breeder, you try to do your best but it just doesn’t always work out.

I named my puppy “Ali” hoping that I could call him “Gator” or “Champ” because he’d be such a great fighter. Welllll, what I got was a sweet guy. When he looks at me with his dark liquid eyes, I can just about hear the “Bud-Light” guy saying “I love ya, Man. I love ya.” So, instead of an “Ali-Gator”, I think I’ve got an “Ali-Bubba”.
